IATROGENIC SPONDYLOLISTHESIS DUE TO FAILED BACK SURGERY

Purpose:

We detected diagnostic and treatment characteristics of iatrogenic spondylolisthesis that was an important cause of failed back surgery.

Patients and methods:

İn this retrospective study, we presented 12 cases with iatrogenic spondylolisthesis developed after lumbar disc and lumbar spinal stenosis surgery, betvveen 1997 and 2001.

Results:

Of them, eight were vvomen and mean age was found as 49.83. Seven patients had one lumbar disc surgery before, two patients had two times, two patients had three times and one patient had five times. As complication, one patient developed superficial vvound infection and cerebrospinal fluid fistula developed in one patient and both patients treated conservatively. Postoperatively ali patients were vvithout pain and two patients having urinary incontinence completely relieved.

Conclusion:

İatrogenic spondylolisthesis is an important cause of failed back surgery and treatable with posterior spinal instrumentation.
