Purpose:

İn this study, lateral extracavitary approach applications at our clinic are presented and the item is discussed under the light of literatüre.

Introduction:

İn thoracal and lumbar region lesions, lateral extracavitary approach has been vvidely used in the case of involvement both anterior and posterior columns to gain one way access.

Patients and Methods:

Between 1997 and 2000, eight patients, operated using lateral extracavitary approach for decompression and stabilisation, are presented with surgical results.

Results:

Of patients, four had tumour, two had infection, one had trauma and one had aneurysmal bone cyst. No surgical morbidity and mortality was observed. Patient having chondrosarcoma was operated second time because of tumour recurrence again three years afterthe initial operation.

Concluslon:

Lateral extracavitary approach allows for access to both anterior and posterior columns at once, doesn't carry the risks of the anterior approach and is easily applicable.
